Pick #2

Our 30-Second Summary:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a complaint against genetic testing company 1Health.io, accusing them of failing to protect the privacy of their clients. It marks the first formal privacy complaint against a company in this industry.

The FTC alleges that 1Health.io misled customers by falsely claiming to delete their data, made changes to their privacy policy without informing clients, and stored sensitive genetic and health data in publicly accessible "buckets" on Amazon Web Service's cloud storage. While there is no evidence of third-party access to the data, nearly 2,400 health reports and raw genetic data of at least 227 consumers were deemed at risk.

The proposed settlement requires 1Health.io to enhance genetic information protections and instruct third-party contract labs to destroy consumer DNA samples older than 180 days. Privacy concerns surrounding DNA testing companies have been a significant issue for Americans, as highlighted by a YouGov poll where more than half of the respondents expressed concerns about privacy in relation to private DNA testing companies.

Mistral AI, founded by alumni from Google's DeepMind and Meta, aims to compete with OpenAI by developing open-source language models and generative AI solutions specifically tailored for enterprise applications. The company plans to release its first text-based generative AI models in 2024.

Pick #4

Our 30-Second Summary:

Cargill, the largest privately held company in the U.S., has quietly established itself as a major player in the plant-based meat industry. While traditional meat companies jumped on the plant-based bandwagon a decade ago, Cargill strategically entered the market later and is now positioning itself for success.

The company offers a range of plant-based products and ingredients, as well as cultivated meat made from animal cells. By partnering with food-tech startups and leveraging its expertise in food production and ingredients, Cargill aims to develop tastier and more affordable plant-based options.

Despite challenges such as consumer preferences and pricing, Cargill's size and long-term investment approach give it a competitive advantage. The company aims to be a diversified protein supplier to meet the increasing global demand for protein over the next few decades.
